Myrtle Beach, SC (7/17/11) – 33-year-old Scott Harvey of Precision Golf School fulfilled a lifelong dream by matching his dad’s feat to win the Carolinas Amateur championship. Harvey’s seven-under par 281 total edged three golfers by two strokes. The championship was conducted at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, SC.
“This is the one that I wanted more than any of them,” said Harvey referring to his victory. “This is the premiere amateur event in the southeast with a great list of champions, including my dad. Knowing my dad won this as well is just incredible.”
Harvey, who finished runner up in this event last year, has struggled to several second place CGA finishes before this year.
“I have been getting better each year and I wanted to come out and make a statement in this final round,” said Harvey. “I knocked it four inches on my approach shot on my first hole which got me going.”
Harvey’s father Bill won countless amateur events including three Carolinas Amateurs. Just in the past four months, Scott has claimed the Carolinas Four-Ball (with Patrick Brady), the North Carolina Open and the Carolinas Amateur. Bill Harvey also won each of these events.
Trevor Cone of Concord, NC made a serious run at the title. Playing four groups ahead of Harvey, Cone was blazing to a possible Dunes Club course record heading to the 18th hole at six-under par for his round and climbing into a share of the lead at seven-under par for the championship. His approach shot to the par 4 18th green clipped a tree branch, hit the greenside bank and rolled back into the water hazard leading to a double bogey six. Cone finished in a tie for second place at 283.
Defending champion Logan Harrell of Huntersville, NC shot a final-round 73 and finished tied for 16th at 290.
Top-30 places received merchandise and are exempt into the 2012 Carolinas Amateur Championship that will be played at Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, NC.
The Carolinas Amateur was founded by the Carolinas Golf Association and first conducted in 1910 at Sans Souci Country Club in Greenville, SC. The club later changed its name to Greenville Country Club.
