Simon McGreal, Gary Trivisonno and Sonny Skinner matched five under par 67s Monday to share the opening-round lead in the first event of the 34th annual PGA Tournament Series on the Wanamaker course at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie.
McGreal, the head instructor at the Precision Golf School in Greensboro, N.C., made three birdies on each nine. Trivisonno, pro-owner at the Strongsville, Ohio, Golf Range, had three birdies and an eagle on the front nine. Skinner is a teaching professional at River Pointe Golf Club in Albany, Ga., when he is not chasing playing opportunities in Georgia, Florida and on the Champions Tour. He had an eagle and five birdies.
Four players were tied at 68, a stroke behind the leaders, including Frank Bensel of Jupiter and Purchase, N.Y., who won the Callaway
Golf-PGA Assistants’ Championship on the Wanamaker course Nov. 11 at 11-under-par 277 for 72 holes. Hobe Sound’s Mike San Filippo shot 71.
There were 54 starters here. The final round is scheduled Tuesday with the winner receiving $2,700 from the $13,500 purse.
